The Murky Waters of Magic Apps

Magic apps sit at a unique intersection between illusion and technology. While they offer exciting creative possibilities, they also raise important questions around consent, privacy, and the lawful use of personal devices. This article explores why many magic apps operate in legal grey areas, how smartphones differ from traditional props, and why transparency and trust are essential as digital magic continues to evolve.

Why Every Magician Needs This Essential Safety Upgrade

Why Every Magician Needs This Essential Safety Upgrade

Magicians accumulate a surprising amount of gear. Cards, coins, DIY gimmicks, electronic props, flash products, chargers and cables all end up crammed into that one chaotic drawer we promise ourselves we’ll organise someday. The problem is that this drawer usually becomes a mix of items that really should not be stored together. Magic may be growing, but it is still a small industry compared to mainstream electronics. Companies like Murphy’s, Penguin, João Miranda and TCC create fantastic props, yet they do not have the same huge testing facilities or multi-million-pound research departments that consumer tech companies rely on. Many electronic magic items are produced in small batches, often hand-assembled, and although made with care, they simply cannot go through the same level of stress testing a smartphone receives. And even the biggest companies sometimes get caught out. Just remember what happened with Samsung and their Note phones. If a global tech giant can run into battery issues, it shows how unpredictable lithium cells can be. Now picture what is actually inside your magic drawer. Old batteries. Power banks. Small electronic gimmicks. Flash paper that arrived wet but has long dried out. Flash cotton. Heating elements. Homemade electronics from a past project. All lying together with no protection. It only takes one ageing battery becoming unstable next to a roll of dried flash paper for things to go badly wrong. Flash paper is one of the items magicians often forget to treat with respect. Once dry, it becomes extremely flammable and very sensitive to heat and friction. Most of us simply toss it into the drawer out of habit. So what is the solution? There is one simple and very affordable upgrade every magician should have: a fireproof storage pouch or LIPO bag. These come in different sizes depending on what you need. For flash paper, flash cotton and other small consumables, a fireproof wallet or document-sized holder is perfect. It is compact, easy to store and designed to contain heat or accidental ignition. For larger items such as electronic props, chargers or anything containing a lithium battery, larger fireproof bags offer more space and better protection. Adding one of these to your setup dramatically reduces the risk of a battery failure turning into a fire. It keeps sensitive items separate, stops flash products from being exposed to heat sources and prevents one faulty item from damaging everything else. It also has the added benefit of helping you organise your electronic props more safely. Magic props are often expensive, delicate and difficult to replace. A fireproof storage pouch is one of the cheapest ways to protect your gear and your workspace while giving you real peace of mind. A small investment, but an important one for any magician working with electronics or flash products. Thanks for being part of the journey. Why We Don’t Stock Every New Magic Release

Why We Don’t Stock Every New Magic Release

In magic, new products appear almost weekly. Shiny trailers, bold promises and claims of miracles that will transform your repertoire seem to pop up non-stop. So why doesn’t The Sleight Co list every new trick the moment it’s announced? We could easily do it. With a single click we could stock every new release and ship thousands of products we have never seen to customers we do not know. Many stores across various industries work exactly this way and it is a business model that clearly succeeds. It just is not the path we choose to take. The answer is simple. We want to offer a curated collection of strong, reliable magic that we personally perform, believe in and stand behind.   A Curated Store, Not a Conveyor Belt Most months we bring in a handful of new items to test. More often than not, we end up turning them down. Sometimes the quality is not where it should be. Sometimes the method does not hold up in real-world performance. Sometimes the hype simply outweighs the genuine value. If a product does not meet our standards, we will not stock it. Even if it is popular. Even if it would sell. Our goal is not to fill the site with everything under the sun. It is to offer tools that we can recommend with confidence.   Personal Taste Matters Too A big part of what we choose to stock comes down to taste. Over time, we hope magicians come to The Sleight Co because they trust our eye for good magic and enjoy the style of effects we choose to champion. Every magician has their own preferences. We are not here to criticise creators or declare what is good or bad. To give one simple example, Ring Flights. They are loved by many and performed by some of the best magicians in the world. They sell incredibly well and there are countless versions available. But they are not us. We are not fans of the effect or the methods behind it, so we choose not to stock them, even though they would sell immediately. It is not about right or wrong. It is about building a store that reflects our taste and ethos. And hopefully, over time, The Sleight Co will attract a community of magicians who enjoy the same kind of magic we do and feel confident performing the pieces we offer.   Why We Vet Everything Personally This whole approach comes from experience. When I was 13, I saved up for a trick online that promised to be the last thing I would ever need. Shipping took a week back then, so the anticipation grew day by day. When it finally arrived, the disappointment was huge. The method was nothing like what had been suggested, the quality felt cheap and the entire experience left me with regret. Magic is built on secrets. Because of that, trust matters. At The Sleight Co, we personally test every item. If we cannot confidently say that something is worth performing, it simply will not go on the shelf.   A Mission Built on Community The Sleight Co was founded by magicians and shaped by the experiences we all share. We care about the community as much as we care about the craft. Whether it is helping young magicians find their footing or quietly supporting performers behind the scenes, the goal is always the same. We want to be more than a shop. We want to be a place that strengthens the magic community.   Thanks for being part of the journey.
